BENWIL single cylinder surface
lift models! That only use chain
or cables to lift one side in the master/slave
configuration,
need to be inspected regularly and right away.
Not very long ago, a
badly corroded chain failed causing a vehicle to fall. The lift did not have
properly operating locks and was missing at least one adapter. This failure
could have been prevented if the lift was properly maintained... A new
chain was installed and the missing lock components replaced.
If you own
this type of lift, make sure to inspect it or have it inspected immediately,
and if there is any sign of chain
(or cable) wear or improper operating locks,
please stop using
it until it is repaired properly. Smitty
Snap-On Issues Wire Rope Safety Advisory According to a product safety advisory issued by the Snap-On corporation, 4-post lifts manufactured between November 2005 and May 2009 experience premature wear of lifting cables. The June 2009 announcement explains that wire rope of inconsistent quality was used in 2005 to 2009 time period. This advisory further emphasizes its importance by stating “Failure of a wire rope could cause lift to collapse resulting in serious personal injury or death.” The Snap-On corporation warns that all 4-post lifts under the Wheeltronics, John Bean, Accu Ind, Snap-On,
Hofmann, Henessey, Mazda ESQ, and American Tire Distributors brands are subject to the safety advisory.

Style two post in-ground lifts are one of the most dependable lifts ever
made, but they had one flaw and that was the fact that the equalizer box
the "I" beam equalizer lowered into would rust through
allowing dirt and back-fill to cause the lift to not lower

Any Vehicle Lift 3 Feet High With No Vehicle On It And Push On The

As surface mounted Rotary lift arms wear over time, the swing arm pivot holes
in the carriage will become elongated, which
then causes the engaging gear to be forced inward against the arm restraint's main
gear. This results in improper alignment, excessive wear and disables the arm restraint system from being able to
engage properly.
To correct the problem you can replace the carriages, arm pins and swing arms at great expense or simply use
the low cost adjustable arm restraint gear kit shown above.
With the adjustable gear you can precisely position the gear to
achieve the proper fit before tightening the gear up, making the arm restraint system
able to engage again.

You can try this test...
While
lift has no vehicle on it, raise your lift until it tops out, then lower it about
an inch or two.
With the controls at "neutral" grab the
superstructure (where the arms attach) and try shaking it back and forth hard.
If the piston "wobbles" or has any "side to
side" movement, that means the top bearing is worn inside the hydraulic cylinder and a
small gap
is being created between the piston and
the seal allowing oil to
"burp" past.. Seals can flex a little to make up for some play in
the bearings, but if the bearing is too worn, even brand new seals can't
prevent oil from leaking past.
When a vehicle is on it
the same wobbling happens, but when you raise the lift all the way, the flange on
the bottom of the piston seats against the inner top of the cylinder and
holds the piston steady preventing the movement that allows oil to leak
past. Most of the leaking happens during the act of
wobbling,
while
raising
or lowering the lift, or if you only have it up part way like when doing a brake
job.
This bearing/seal replacement kit for Rotary 6-bolt Gland Rings adds a new upper bearing to your lifts
hydraulic cylinder effectively limiting the extra play from
old worn cylinder bearings. The kit also includes a new seal style, converting
the cylinder from the old style seal that had a spring on the bottom to the new JG227 Rotary Seal.
The new bearing is replaceable
too, allowing you the ability to maintain your older lift for years of added
service capability.

If piston "wobbles" or seals seem to be leaking for no good reason,
you may need to replace the removable "Nylatron" bearings in the 8-bolt gland.
You can try this test... While
lift has no vehicle on it, raise your lift until it stops, then lower it about

If
your power unit is losing pressure and has difficulty lifting vehicles
like it used to, you may need to replace the internal pump seals...
Worn
leaky seals between the pump and valve body inside the power unit tank, allow
the oil from the pump to squeeze past and return to the tank instead of
filling the hydraulic cylinders. Worn "O" rings between the pump and
suction tube allows air into the system and can also cause the pump to lose
it's "prime" and take longer to build pressure before it begins to
raise the load... Several special seals and "O" rings are included
in this pump seal replacement kit. Installing the parts from this kit takes
about a half an hour, and even a Monkey could probably do it if you bribe it
with a banana or two! No oil draining necessary because it just stays in

Safety Legs actually serve a dual purpose. They not only act as a
safety mechanism, but they also prevent the lift from being able to
Turn or Rotate. (Ever see someone turn a small car around on a
lift while it's up in the air?) Commonly called "Non-Rotators" they
keep the pins on the bottom of the lift piston (plunger) from lining
up with the slots in the cylinder casing.
(Pistons are removed
from the casings by lining up the pins with the slots, and it's not
too safe to have that happen with a car all the way up in the air.)
Fore
& Aft Truck & Bus Lifts:
Often
they are just missing on some fore & aft truck lifts.... It could save
you or at least your
toolbox, oil drain or other equipment if a truck lift decides to come
down on it's own. Lifts can drop as quickly as the oil can be
sprayed from an oil supply hose that's feeding the front cylinder if
it pops.
Pit
located feed hoses can be up to 1 inch I.D. on older Truck & Bus
lifts.
Many
times hoses are left hanging in a polluted mix of oil and water
eventually weakening the hose causing it to fail. Unfortunately this
has a way of happening when there is a heavy load on the front
cylinder. You
can't see the feed hose because they are located under the steel pit
cover plates.
(Fore
& Aft lifts should be inspected for preventive maintenance twice a

not going down all the way? Losing clearance for lifting low profile vehicles?
It
could be because years of Oil-Dry and other "Floor Crap" slowly
building up inside the pipe casing the safety-leg lowers into. Two-Post lifts
sometimes accumulate hardened debris and oil-dry in the equalizer rack bar tubes
as well. The rack bar pressing down on that crap every time it's lowered
packs it so hard that just vacuuming it out is like trying to vacuum hardened
concrete.
This
handy tool is a long Steel Auger that fits
down the pipe in the floor
and loosens the hardened, packed oil-dry and whatever else
managed to fall
down there so you can pull it out loaded on the auger itself
and then vacuum the remainder out so the pipe is as clean as a babies ass!
Or...
maybe even cleaner in some cases. :)
