Looking
for Info on a new In-Ground Lift? Or just fed up with spending
cash fixing your High-Pressure In-Ground Lift
someone sold you only 8 to 10 years ago? In either
case, it's better to turn back the clock a little and rely on a
Tried and True no-nonsense design.
A GLOBE Low-Pressure Lift costs about the same and
sometimes even less than a High Pressure In-Ground Lift, except
for the fact that you get Two or Three
times the
service life out of the GLOBE Lift.
20
to 30 even 40+ years of service life is not that
uncommon to see!
These
lifts do not have... an underground cassette-lift
container with multiple high pressure rubber hoses or
small high pressure fittings that can break, wear out or
leak oil.
They
don't have... little air operated lock-latch
cylinders that can leak air, stick open and need maintenance.
They
don't have... coiled air hoses sealed in an
underground container that can get pinched and slowly leak
air or even rip apart and fail at the worst possible time
basically "locking" a vehicle up in the air
until replaced so you can get the Customers vehicle down,
off your lift and on it's merry way.
And
these Globe lifts don't need... an electrically
operated hydraulic power unit because they're powered by
your shop's compressed air supply.
Low
pressure in-ground lifts can last up to 30 or 40 years, or
even longer depending
on the way it was installed and the quality of the
compressed air being utilized
to operate it.
This
is information that should not be ignored when it's time
to choose which type of In-Ground Lift to purchase for
your service department.
Simplicity
is always your best bet if you want to save money and lower your
operating costs.... With only one or two
moving parts, Low
Pressure in-ground lifts are simply the most reliable, cost
effective lifts to operate.
That
is why we get calls about low-pressure in-ground lifts that
are 30, 40 and even 50 or 60 years old, that are still providing reliable lifting service that may just need a
replacement seal kit to bring it back to top working condition.
It actually pays to
repair those 50 to 60 year old lifts rather than replacing them with
a shorter lifespan, high-pressure in-ground lift that has a half a hundred parts that begin wearing out the moment you
start really using it.
Regardless of what
any "High Pressure In-Ground Lift Manufacturer" seems to want to
admit, in our opinion any brand 'High Pressure In-Ground Lift' will be lucky to make it past
7 to 9 years of service life without some expensive repair work involved. Either
one or two new high pressure cylinders, hydraulic hoses,
perhaps a new electric/hydraulic power unit. You get the
idea... and you get the repair bill.
Higher
operating pressures mean more stress and wear on the
lifting system and it's many parts involved in the
operating process.
That
is the honest truth, no bullshit about it.
Some
major lift companies in the last 10-15 years took a huge gamble when they
stopped making these tried-and-true lift designs, gambling that Consumers will buy their over engineered, expensive to maintain high pressure
designs. That's why even now, they continue to claim low-pressure lifts using
oil underground are illegal. The reason for this is that they have to push their
new 'high-pressure designs' on consumers even though the old design is the
most cost effective, most reliable design in existence to this very day. Remember
also, that high-pressure means Manufacturers will be making more parts to sell
you for years to come.
Giving
another meaning to "HIGH PRESSURE LIFT SALES"
because Low-Pressure Lifts (like those listed below) are becoming popular again. The
"High-Pressure Lift Sales Pitch" will someday be
the only way to push someone into buying one of the
high-pressure, high-maintenance blunders.
Furthermore,
if anybody tells you "low-pressure in-ground lifts are against the law because
of environmental regulations." You will soon see for yourself, that they
really have NO idea of what they're talking
about. Most of the time they really don't even know
what the actual regulations even encompass, but now you
can!

The
difference between "Semi-Hydraulic Lifts" &
"Full Hydraulic Lifts"
A FULL
HYDRAULIC lift has a separate oil tank and has two
valves to operate the lift, an oil-valve and an air-valve.
The oil tank can be under the floor near the hydraulic
cylinders or can be mounted on the floor surface next to
a wall near the oil valve or even in another room out of
the way and then piped in. The air
is piped through the air valve to the tank, where the pressure
pushes on the oil in the tank moving it through a 1-1/4
pipe to an oil control valve and then to the hydraulic
cylinders to raise the vehicle.
The raising of the vehicle
is controlled by manipulating the lever on the 1-1/4 inch
oil control valve after pressurizing the oil tank.
A SEMI-HYDRAULIC
Lift has the oil tank integrated with the hydraulic
cylinder itself and only has one valve, an air valve to
raise and lower it. There is no 1-1/4 inch oil pipe leading
to the cylinder, instead it simply has the 1/2-inch air pipe
going to it. The 1/2-inch air pipe
that enters the bottom of the hydraulic cylinder goes straight up
through the oil inside, almost
reaching the top of the cylinder. The air pressure builds inside
the cylinder air chamber pushing
down on the oil, telescoping the piston from the cylinder and thereby raising
the car. This type of lift is raised and lowered by simply adding air or
removing air from the hydraulic oil reservoir in the
cylinder. Semi-Hydraulic lifts are always single
post lifts and were made by many different companies
throughout the years.

to EPA Regulations on small underground oil tanks
Equipment
and Machinery that Contain Regulated
Substances for
Operational Purposes.
b. Equipment and Machinery that
Contain Regulated Substances for Operational Purposes.
Equipment and machinery that contain regulated substances for
operational purposes, such as hydraulic lift tanks and
electrical equipment, are excluded from today's regulations.
These specific tank categories were deferred from regulation
in the proposal, and the Agency requested comments on whether,
and to what extent, these tanks should be subject to
regulation under the UST program. Several commenters responded
to this request and gave several reasons why these tanks
should not be regulated as USTs. Their comments included three
main points: the tanks are self-monitoring; the tanks pose a
minimal risk to human health and the environment; and there
have been few leaks.
Because these tanks contain
regulated substances solely for operational purposes, the
commenters argued that the loss of regulated substance would
be accompanied by faulty operation of the equipment or
machinery and thus the equipment is
"self-monitoring." Second, the threat to human
health and the environment was judged to be minimal because
the tanks contain small amounts of regulated substances.
Also,
the commenters said that these devices rarely leak.
Data
submitted for leaks from electrical equipment, for example,
show a leak incidence much lower than that for other types of
tanks
such as those at service stations.
This category of tanks includes
hydraulic lifts and electrical equipment. Although commenters
did not suggest other specific types of tanks that would fall
within this class, EPA believes that other tanks of this type
would also be included, provided that the tanks meet two major
criteria: the equipment or machinery contains small amounts of
regulated substances solely for operational purposes; and a
loss of regulated substance is accompanied by faulty operation
of the equipment or machinery, such that a loss of fluid
causes knowledge of the loss.
In excluding this category of
tanks, the Agency agrees with the commenters that these types
of tank systems pose a relatively low level of risk compared
to other types of storage tanks for the reasons given above.
Moreover, the Agency recognizes that these tanks, although
within Subtitle I jurisdiction, are not central to the
Congressional concerns that created this program. Thus,
regulation of these tank systems appears at this time to be
unnecessary under section 9003(a).
EPA also believes that this
potentially overwhelming large universe would require
considerable effort on the part of implementing agencies even
for just notification, with very little discernable
environmental benefit. For example, the universe of hydraulic
lift tanks alone has been estimated at 350,000 to 600,000
lifts. These figures do not include elevator lifts. Regulation
of these types of tanks would unnecessarily divert
implementing agency resources from other, more serious health
threats. Therefore, today's final rule excludes such tanks.
